About KCNI 1280 AM"The Station Where Your Friends Are"![]() On September 28, 1949, KCNI 1280 AM went on the air. The call letters, K.C.N.I. were chosen to best represent owners Bud and Georgia Crawford's goals. Keeping Central Nebraska Informed. Bud and Georgia worked together to bring radio to Custer County until his death in 1954. Georgia continued the work started by she and Bud and was truly ahead of her time being the only female owner and manager in the state for many years while competing in a man's world. In 1978, she was honored as the first woman to be inducted into the Nebraska Broadcaster's Hall of Fame. Many local residents have held positions at the radio station. Their love of community and of "the magic" of radio have made for some interesting listening for all. Manager, David J. Birnie, is the fifth manager in more than fifty years. He has a staff committed to providing this community the best in local coverage possible. KCNI signs on each day at 6:00 am and currently signs off at 7:00 pm. Aside from featuring a country hits music format with a light blend of Country Gold, KCNI also features world and national news provided by CNN at the top of every hour. We present 4 major newscasts Monday through Saturday produced by the KCNI News Director which features National News - Local News - Nebraska News - Local Sports - Regional and National Sports - Farm News. (6:00 am - 7:00 am / Noon - 5:00 pm). KCNI broadcasts Nebraska Football and Basketball through the Nebraska Sports Net. Regional Sports Talk Show comes on each weekday evening from 6:00pm - 7:00pm. Finally, numerous remote broadcasts occurr to promote area business and events. |
